In an age where TikTok videos and Instagram reels are king, it’s easy to wonder if blogging still has a pulse. Back when I first started in marketing cough a decade ago cough, bloggers were IT. The term influencer was barely coined and it was all about blogging (in the fashion industry at least).
But the once go-to outlet for digital expression has been facing some major shifts and the truth is, blogging isn’t gone- it’s evolving.
Bloggers today aren’t pushing out posts weekly like they used to. Actually, only 15% publish weekly now, which is a drastic drop compared to a decade ago. But when they do, bloggers are putting in the time. According to Orbit Media’s blogger report, these writers are spending more than 7 hours per post, crafting in-depth 2,000+ word articles ensuring their content truly resonates with it’s readers and search engines alike.
The current challenge is that there’s more competition than ever before. And when I say competition, I’m not only talking about other bloggers, but also video platforms and social media who consistently siphon their audiences. Bloggers who focus on SEO are the winners here as they are the one’s still seeing steady traffic.
So is blogging dead? Not quite. It’s just not the fast, easy traffic surge it once was. Instead, blogging has matured and needs it’s own TLC. It’s become a space that values quality over quantity and in a content overloaded world, it turns out people still love a good read.
